Stone Expo “it all comes together” Surfaces Las Vegas- YKStoneCenter

Our first show this year, and what better place to have it at other than LAS VEGAS.. hahaha. It was a work-with-pleasure trip- Went to see David Copperfield (we got to be part of their after*show program, where they tested a ‘trick’ on a group of 15-20 people and we participated in letting him know how he can improve it so he would perform it in couple months), , and ate at a couple of really good restaurants. Once again, it was really great to go to educational classes, to the StoneExpo trade show, meet with old vendors and exchange information with new ones.. We also had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan Zanger, who is the President of Walker Zanger company, and visiting their Vegas location showroom- it was such an inspiration.

Estimates
We respond promptly to your call or e-mail, and within the same day will schedule a free estimate. We answer all of your questions about your project during estimate. You can also fax or e-mail us your layout drawing with approximate dimensions, then based on your drawing we can provide you with an estimate.

Visit our showroom
Bring any samples such as a cabinet’s door, tile, hardware, faucets, floors & wallpaper to work with colors and styles. Our interior designer will answer any questions you may have and help you choose a proper design for your project, as well as offer a free in-home consultation. We strive to carry the most finest granites and hard surface material for you to choose from. We also stock granite, porcelain, stainless steel and glass sinks for kitchen, bars, vanities, & laundry rooms.

Templating
For templating, we do not need to remove your existing countertops- so you can use current countertop until installation day. In order to complete the template, your cabinets should be properly installed & leveled in order for us to perfectly install the countertops. We measure with a laser, and take from 1-2 hrs depending on the size and difficulty of the project – thus all the drawings are digital, providing you with an ultimate quote. All appliances must be at the jobsite during the installation process. Generally from this point, the fabrication will begin and the install is in 7-10 business days.

Fabrication
After we receive your signed approval on the countertops & template, we take a photo of your selected slab with our newest slabsmith photo rendering software, providing you with the ultimate layout of your countertops. When we create your layout, we are looking into all details such as where is the best spot for seams, direction of veins & grain. We have the ability to shape various edges, sink cutouts, corners and shapes that are desired by our customers in our Denver facility with our waterjet machine. We also offer leathering, and honing of the surface of the stone.. Some minor cuts and polishing may be done on job side.

Installation
Generally an average size kitchen countertop installation takes just one day. Our installers will leave your home in exactly the same state it was in when we arrived, that is except for the elegant and functional surfacing project left behind. At YK Stone Center, we know that our excellence in craftsmanship is our best advertisement, no questions asked quality guarantee.

Warranty
Work that is performed by Y.K. Stone Center is backed up by a 10 year limited warranty. We do not cover damages caused by customer (such as cracks caused by heavy abuse to the surface, scratching counter, hitting countertop and etc.)

The construction work performed on c-top surface AFTER countertop installation, is NOT covered by YKStoneCenter warranty.

What is: Granite, Marble, Travertine.

gran·ite/ˈgranit/
Noun: ~A very hard, granular, crystalline, intrusive igneous rock consisting mainly of quartz, mica, and feldspar and often used as a building…
~Used in similes and metaphors to refer to something very hard and impenetrable.
When Earth was forming it was a hot liquid ball of rock. While the Earth cooled three types of rock were formed; metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous. Granite is in the category of igneous rock. Igneous rock was created deep below the surface of the earth when the magma cooled.
Granite is composed of the following minerals:
* Feldspar (50% or greater)
* Quartz (25-40%)
* Mica (3-10%)
Granite is a strong stone because its mineral grains have grown tightly together during a very slow cooling period. The quartz and feldspar that compose it are harder than steel. This makes granite suitable for indoor counters & floors/ walls, outdoor buildings or paving stone/ street curbing and outdoor kitchens..

mar·ble/ˈmärbəl/
Noun: A hard crystalline metamorphic form of limestone, typically white with mottling or streaks of color.
Verb: Stain or streak (something) so that it looks like variegated marble: “stone walls marbled with moss”.
Marble is a metamorphic rock made out of limestone. When limestone is subjected to tremendous pressure for a long time (like if limestone is buried under a lot of other rock or an ocean) it gets squashed into marble. Marble is more beautiful than limestone and tougher. Marble is usually lighter in color (White Carrerra), cream (Crema Marfil), and dark/ light brown (Emperador dark/ Deano Real). It is mainly used for bathrooms countertops and accent tables.

Difference between marble and granite:
They are both stones. They are both natural products, which means there can be variations in color and pattern- no single slab is the same, and sometimes what you see in the display is not very close to what you actually get delivered- that’s why we recommend you hand pick your slab for your project. Both come in a wide range of colors and patterns. Both can be stained by oily or highly colored foods. So both require resealing every once in a while (it seems like yearly is the usual rule- we offer a spray can that is 3-in-one; cleaner, polisher, and sealer.) Both are relatively heatproof, and they won’t scorch (a very hot pot placed on either type of stone could crack it, theoretically.) They start at about $50 per square foot installed, but granite can go as high as $200 per square foot in material only.

But granite is a much harder, stronger stone than marble. It resists impacts and scratches better. And it is resistant to acids like tomato juice, lemon juice or vinegar. Marble is simply calcium carbonate, just like chalk, but in a compressed and crystallized form. So acids can etch the surface permanently. (And it will fizz, just like chalk in vinegar.) And it cracks and scratches more easily. Some marbles have very little pattern (some are totally pure white) so stains and marring stand out more. Granite typically has a complex of spots or patches of many colours or shades that hides stains better. So for hard use, granite is a better choice.

Marble has a look that is possibly more elegant and luxurious. It has extremely fine crystals, which create a snowy or satiny look. And the colors and patterns can be quite dramatic. Granite tends to have larger crystals. This creates a coarser, more sparkly look. Both come in a range of colors and patterns- not a single slab is the same!

this said, Granite is recommended for kitchen countertops.
Marble is higher maintenance, less durable and about as expensive.

trav·er·tine/ˈtravərˌtēn/
Noun: White or light-colored calcareous rock deposited from mineral springs, used in building.

Travertine is a natural stone material from the limestone family. It is made of calcium carbonate and is usually found in the form of deposits near warm or hot springs. Because travertine is such a porous material, it should be sealed before use in construction or renovation projects. It is most commonly used for countertops and flooring, but may also be used in showers and tub surrounds as well as in exterior decor. Never use cleaners that contain vinegar or citrus oils on travertine. Even water can be harmful to the texture of travertine if it is allowed to sit on the stone for long periods of time. Some travertine stones are harder than others. Although the hardness varies, it will still scratch. It’s not as soft as soapstone but it can’t compete with the hardness of granite.
Travertine is available in different colors and finishes, from natural, neutral colors such as creamy white and beige to tan and reddish brown.
The different finishes include honed, polished and tumbled. Honed travertine is smooth, but unlike polished, it has a matte finish. Polished travertine is smooth, but buffed and polished until shiny. Tumbled travertine has a rougher, textured finish and often has rounded corners for an antique look. Honed finish is most commonly used.

FAQ about Granite

What is granite?

Granite is an igneous rock formed from the earth’s magma, which is composed of quartz, feldspar, mica and a variety of other minerals, the formation of granite takes thousands of years and is the second hardest natural stone next to the diamond.

Granite comes in a variety of colors, and no single natural stone slab is the same!

Where on earth does granite come from?

Granite comes from deep within the earth and forms through a process that can take thousands of years. Over time, liquid magma is forced between layers of rock and when it cools-it forms a layer of granite. The granite acquires a crystalline look from the mineral elements that are left after the cooling process. This extremely long process makes granite into a hard and durable stone.
Found in the earth’s continental crust, granite is the main rock that lies beneath the thin sedimentary veneer of the continents and forms throughout the world.
Granite’s features are dependent on where in the world it was formed. Although granite is widely distributed throughout the world, commercially it is generally manufactured in Africa, Spain, India, Brazil, China and Norway.

Granite quarries?

Granite is mined in quarries, which are large pits or excavation sites found all around the world.

Granite is cut it into desirable blocks, which is usually accomplished with wire saws. If the granite is to be used for countertops, it is cut and polished into appropriate shapes and sizes such as a 2cm or 3cm sheets that are up to 60sqft.

How do I best maintain granite countertops?

Our granite is already pre-sealed, and we seal it when we install your tops.  The initial seal is necessary because granite is porous and will stain easily without it. If a spill should occur, clean up before the stain has a chance to penetrate the surface. Generally, you can clean your granite countertops with soap and water.
Using regular cleaning/ acidic chemicals on your countertop will strip the seal and leave the porous surface of the granite exposed.
3-IN-One spray – Cleaner, Protector, Sealer- (at YKStone Center $20.00 per bottle) Use once every 3 months.

Can granite countertops be repaired?

In most cases, the repair will be- a scratch, a small chip or a stain, which are fairly easy to do for a professional restoration team. If granite is cracked, it will need to be completely removed and replaced.

What is the life expectancy of granite countertops?

Granite is already thousands of years old, and no matter what happens to it, it will not stain or scratch and is heat resistant.

If you a using the granite countertop as your cutting boar- it will only dull your knife. the only thing that can scratch the granite is a diamond. Proper installation of granite tops will prevent the granite from cracking or braking.

How do I install granite countertops?

Installing granite countertops incorrectly can lead to serious problems and possibly the need for replacement.
YKStone Center is proud to have two professional install teams on hand.

Mountain Home-Old Western Meets New Style. Natural Stone by: YKStone Center

YK Stone Center had the privilege of doing all of natural stone fabrication and installation for this Western Style house up in Breckenridge Colorado. I had an opportunity to take photographs for the owners, Debbie & Bill Pain for their portfolio, and gosh, it took me about 4 hrs to go around the house (i admit, i got lost in the house a couple of times). This home has won the Parade of Homes in winter 2010 (Read full article, go here)- Design by Fred Horvath – owner of Blue River Custom Homes and home owner Debbie Pain. As you walk in, the feel just changes- all of the exterior stone is on the interior, detailed with western touches and it looks absolutely amazing.

Copper Patina Repair Kit – $56.99 per kit (see below)
An easy kit designed to touch up or change the finish patina on copper sinks. Includes all that is needed for this process.

Is Copper a sanitary material?

Interestingly enough, copper is more sanitary than most other basin materials and is actually “antibacterial”. Science shows that bacteria can live for days on a stainless steel surface, but for couple of hours on copper.

How To Care for a Copper Sink

Copper sinks- made from the highest quality copper available. Patinas on these sinks are created by a firing process and will change over time. Caring for  copper sink is easy and virtually maintenance free. A copper finish is a living finish and is constantly, gradually changing in color. You can reduce this change with the use of a Copper Patina Repair Kit (purchase at YK Stone Center $56.99)- An easy kit designed to touch up or change the finish patina on copper sinks

For basic cleaning simply use a mild soap and water – other cleaners are not necessary. Copper will naturally patina over time and develop a warm medium patina. Unless you want to maintain a shiny copper finish, do not use copper cleaners. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals such as Comet. Rinse sink after each use, then dry with a soft cloth to remove any water spots.

Maintenance- To help a copper sink keep its patina for a longer period of time, use a carnauba based paste wax, applied monthly. ALWAYS dry your copper sink after each use.

If your copper sink has a dark spot from an item sitting in it too long, use a yellow & green sponge such a Scotch Brite and gently rub the dark area until it begins to lighten, then allow the natural patina to do its natural work. You may also try a paste of baking soda and water applied with a sponge.

Do not leave acidic foods such as tomatoes, tomato paste, lemons, or margarita mix sitting in your sink as they will leave a shiny spot in the sink. If this does happen, because copper is a metal that changes over time, the sink will recover its patina and blend in with the rest of the sink. The more use of the sink, the faster this will occur.

Matte Copper
This finish will require the most maintenance and is the only finish that copper cleaners may be used to maintain the shiny appearance. Using a wax or a protective sealant will reduce the maintenance necessary to maintain the finish and delay the natural patina process.

Nickel Finish
Hand hammered polished nicked that darkens naturally over time, giving it a deeper finish. Care- After each use rinse with water and a soft cloth, DO NOT use anything abrasive such as Comet or Ajax as this will scratch the finish. Most common metal cleaners can be used to brighten the finish periodically.

Maintenance- Apply a carnauba based paste wax monthly to help the sink keep its shiny appearance. Buff with a soft cloth. As with an unfinished copper, you can use a wax or protective sealant to reduce the maintenance required.
